Revere Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Car

A Revere man has died from injuries sustained while attempting to cross a street in a poorly lit area and under rainy conditions the evening of Saturday, November 14.

State Police say Jose Funez, 35, of Revere, was crossing a street at the corner of Revere Beach Parkway and Winthrop Avenue around 7:30 p.m., when Jonathan Spano, 29, of Winthrop hit Funez with his 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Spano was traveling northbound and Funez had been walking eastbound when he was hit.

Funez was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to published reports, a witness said the wet and dark conditions Saturday night most likely contributed to the accident, along with the fact that Funez was reportedly dressed in black, the car was black and there was poor lighting in the area.

Police say the accident does not appear to be criminal and no charges will likely be filed in the accident. Spano remained at the scene after the crash. The left and right travel lanes of Route 145 northbound were closed for two hours for vehicle removal and accident investigation. The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Revere fire and police assisted at the scene.

No further information was made available Sunday night.
